Charlotte was the Pits
Written by Daniel Turner, Tuesday June 01 2010
There was plenty of action on the track Sunday in Concord, NC, but there was no shortage of thrills along pit row. Crashes, bump ups and even a couple of crew members getting hit by cars were part of the activity at the Coca Cola 600.
Kyle Busch suffered severe front end damage when his No. 18 car was struck in the pits after a two tire change. Attempting to reenter the track with the lead he gained when Jimmie Johnson crashed Busch almost struck the car of A.J. Allmendinger. While that accident was being avoided, No. 43 Brad Keselowski struck Busch’s car as he was entering his stall. The front end damage to Busch dropped him to 27th on the restart.
For Busch his scrapes on pit row were far from over. Charging out from his final stop in an effort to gain lost ground he had the addition of tire changer Nick Odell draped across the hood. Odell had not managed to scramble over the wall before Busch beat his hasty exit back to the track. As Odell slid to safety Busch thanked him for his dedication and continued on.
As tough as things were in the pits for Busch, he had one more incident on the track after claiming his third place finish. Jeff Burton confronted Busch at the end of the Coca Cola 600 accusing No 18 of slashing his tire during an aggressive move.
While the 31 car did suffer a cut tire it may have been the result of teammate Clint Bowyers aggressive driving. It was tough to confirm who did the deed, but Busch claimed Bowyer was the culprit.
While Burton had a bad day on the track and Busch suffered misery in the pits neither could top Kevin McDowell for a truly bad day. The crewman for Greg Biffle was struck by Tony Stewart’s car and taken to a local hospital.
