Duke Beats ND for Lacrosse Title
Duke won its first NCAA men's lacrosse championship defeating Notre Dame 6-5 Monday on a goal by C.J. Costabile with only five seconds into sudden-death overtime.
Costabile won the faceoff from Trever Sipperly and rushed downfield and beat ND’s standout goalie, Scott Rodgers, with a straight on shot.
The Duke players immediately rushed onto the field while celebrating the fastest goal to start an overtime in NCAA championship history.
This is the third try in a championship game for Duke who twice before lost the game by one goal. Not this time though, as they walked away with the championship trophy by defeating the Irish.
It was the lowest-scoring title game in NCAA Lacrosse history, but still was very exciting as there were five ties, and neither team ever led by more than one goal.
The game ended a brilliant postseason run by Notre Dame, who entered the tournament unseeded, who defeated three seeded teams to advance to the title game for the first time.
The game was played cautiously by both teams, with the priority being defense and possession time.
The teams set a championship-game record for fewest combined goals through three quarters (eight) and tied the mark for fewest at halftime (five).
