Six times All Star Tamika Catchings has proven her worth on the court in the WNBA. The former Tennessee stand out is in her eighth season and in the early going of the 2010 campaign is averaging 17.8 PPG, 4.30 RPG and 3.0 assists. In short, the talented forward is well on her way to another All Star season with the Indiana Fever.
Catchings doesn’t limit her efforts to the hardwood. She has joined Beyond Sports as an ambassador to their humanitarian efforts. Being the President of the WNBA Players Association, Catchings is accustomed to working hard away from to the game to promote the betterment of others. She looks forward to helping Beyond Sport in their use of athletics to promote social change across the world.
Beyond Sports promotes their agenda three different ways. They offer financial support yearly in excess of $1 Million to fund projects around the world that strive to address social issues within their communities. They hold a summit featuring their ambassadors interacting with global leaders to suggest ways sports can stimulate social change. Along with Catchings other ambassadors include Julie Foudy, Olympic gold medalist Michael Johnson and Sebastian Coe. Political leaders who have attended past summits include former England Prime Minister Tony Blair and Prince Faisal Al Hussein of Jordan. Thirdly they offer an online networking platform for any organization that wants to use sports to advance social development in an effort to promote ideas, further understanding and provide a chance to form alliances.
Catchings brings experience to her post having formed the Catch the Stars Foundation to assist disadvantaged youths in entering sports programs. In 2008 Catchings was awarded the Dawn Staley Community Leadership Award for her charity work in Indianapolis.
