Women Settle Into Form at Roland Garros
Written by Daniel Turner, Monday May 24 2010
Monday’s women’s side of tennis held none of the surprise from opening day. Matches went as expected with the top seeded players advancing.
Not wanting to go the way of Victoria Azarenka and Maria Jose Martinez who have time to enjoy Paris after being eliminated in the first round, Serena Williams shook off an inspired opening from Stefanie Voegle and survived the match winning 7-6, 6-2. In the early going it appeared that Williams might not be able to continue in her fifth attempt to win a calendar year Grand Slam. Voegle made great use of her forehand to take an early advantage; however Williams relied upon her devastating serve and strong back court play to seize the match. Williams has never lost the first round of a Grand Slam, but didn’t celebrate this victory. Instead she criticized her effort and promised to improve in future matches.
Third seeded Caroline Wozniacki had no trouble disposing of Alla Kudryavtseva by a score of 6-0, 6-3. Wozniacki has been struggling with an ankle injury that aided in her bowing out early at Rome, Madrid and Warsaw, but she was back in form and Kudryavtseva had nothing in her arsenal to match the three seed.
Fifth seed Elena Dementieva also found the going easy in her match against Petra Martic winning 6-1, 6-1. Dementieva has also bowed out early in the previous tune ups on clay, but she found her form at Roland Garros and made Martic pay the price.
Number 11 seed Li Na battled and prevailed over Kristina Mladenovic 7-5 6-3 and number 12 Lucie Safarova defeated Jelena Dokic 6-2, 6-2.
