Cutler and Martz Working Just Fine
Written by Nolan Thomas, Saturday May 22 2010
A year after believing they acquired the franchise quarterback they have been looking for for decades, the Chicago Bears have matched him up with Mike Martz, the mastermind of one of the NFL's most explosive offenses in the Super Bowl era.
There has been talk this offseason that Martz has a particularly difficult system to learn, and that quarterback Jay Cutler will have a hard time learning the full playbook by the time they host the Lions in the season opener.
However, Cutler says Martz's offense isn't any tougher to learn than any other system that he has played in.
"Anytime you get a new system, it's going to be complicated," Cutler said. "It's different from everything everyone is used to. It's just a different system. It's not more complicated. It's not harder."
Martz's offense features timing routes, where the quarterback throws to a spot in anticipation of a receiver being there. Cutler has never played in that type of system, but he seems to be making a smooth transition.
On Saturday during the Bears minicamp, he fired a pass over the middle before Devin Hester even came out of his break. A split second later, Hester caught the ball in stride.
Martz has been especially impressed with how Cutler has picked up the system.
“He’s been remarkable,” Martz said. “He’s such a quick study in everything. There are very few people I’ve been around in my life that are that intelligent. He’s extremely intelligent. He has great respect for players, the system and the game. The thing I like about him is he has great respect for the game. He does everything he can to learn it. He’s passionate about it. He’s in here early. He stays afterwards. He’s been perfect so far.”
Because both men are fierce competitors with fiery personalities, Martz is well aware of the speculation that he and Cutler would clash.
“That tickles me,” Martz said. “I love this ‘Jay Watch’ kind of thing.
“It’s crazy because he is everything you want as a coach. He’s all about winning and about perfection. He wants to be a great player. He wants to be on a great team. For me, there’s no problem. I don’t know what the issues have been in the past. I don’t really care what they are. We connected right away, and I think the world of him, both as a player and as a man. I’m very pleased with him.”
And the Bears quarterback is very pleased with Martz and very happy to be the trigger man in his high powered offense.

Dubster, Cutler is pretty tough and has played every game so far in his career.(knock on wood) Also, Cutler is the most mobile QB Martz has ever had so he may be able to run out of trouble where as Warner and others were not.

Hey Nolan, how long do you think it will be before Cutler gets hurt? Martz is famous for not protecting his QBs so that he can get everybody out in the pass patterns. If you take Cutler in our Playerpress fantasy football league this year (that I won last year), make sure you have a good backup.

Nice article... Glad to hear every thing is going well between them so far and I hope it continues that way when they start facing defenses
