Blackhawks Drowning Sharks, Now Up 3-0

With two days to stew over back to back losses in the Western Conference Finals, the San Jose Sharks boarded their aircraft and headed for Chicago. Friday night’s game at the United Center was a chance for San Jose to get back in the series, at least make it respectable. The best the Sharks could do was force overtime where they fell 3-2.

It was a quiet first period, but San Jose’s Patrick Marleau scored first in the second period. The lead only lasted two and a half minutes before Patrick Sharp found the back of the net for Chicago. Dave Bolland gave the Blackhawks a 2-1 lead with about seven minutes to play only to watch Patrick Marleau score his second goal with 4:23 left. Dustin Byfuglien played hero for Chicago, taking a perfect pass from Dave Bolland, who was behind the Sharks’ net, and lighting up the red goal lamp. As you can imagine, a celebration ensued.

Sharks’ goalie, Evgeni Nabokov played brilliantly, stopping 35 shots, but Chicago’s Antti Niemi stood on his head for the third night in a row. He stopped 44 shots, 18 of them in the third period alone.

San Jose continued its clean play, only being whistled for two penalties to Chicago’s six (Bolland whistled for three 2-minute minors), but they only took advantage on one of the power plays.

Game four becomes a must-win game for the Sharks. They have not been outplayed by much in this series, if at all, yet they stare at an 0-3 hole. The good news for San Jose is that a 0-3 comeback has been done three times, once this year. The bad news, their next loss sends them on an extended vacation, one without Lord Stanley’s Cup.
