Leok in Good in Spain
Estonian Tanel Leok took the MX1 class in the Grand Prix of Catalunya, Spain on May 17. The LS Motors Honda rider overcame a dreadful first moto to seize victory in the second heat. His first heat seventh place finish was eclipsed when he took advantage of Max Nagl’s crash while holding the lead in heat two. Once he was ahead of Nagl he never looked back.
After winning moto one Nagl bulled his way to the front in the second heat, but was rewarded with two crashes that lowered him to ninth in moto two. However, his overall was good enough for a third place finish in the GP.
Yamaha Monster Energy Motocross rider David Philippaerts finished second overall. Not only was Philippaerts nursing an injured hand entering the race, he tweaked his back coming off a jump in heat one. He finished the second moto in excruciating pain and is looking forward to the two weeks he has to recover before competing again.
Defending world MX1 champion and overall point’s leader Tony Cairoli finished fourth and missed the podium for the first time this year. The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider crashed in heat one and finished sixth. Although he came back to finish third in heat two it was not enough to earn a podium spot.
Crashes took their toll on others with the worse leading to a dislocated shoulder for Martin Honda’s Jimmy Albertson. He was hit by both Nagl and Steve Ramon on the side steps and needed a doctor to slip his shoulder back into place.
