Flyers Fly High

Down in the series 3-0, the Flyers battled back. Down in game seven 3-0, same result. The Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Boston Bruins 4-3 catapulting them into the Eastern Conference Finals against the Montreal Canadiens.

For only the third time in history, a team has come back from a 3-0 series deficit. One of those other teams is the Flyers opponent in the next round. The eighth-seeded Habs knocked off the reigning Stanley Cup champs after dropping the first three games.

Boston jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on goals by Michael Ryder and Milan Lucic (two). James van Riemsdyk scored with 2:48 left in the first period to give Philadelphia life. Scott Hartnell and Danny Briere scored for the Flyers in the second period, tying the game up. With 7:08 left in the game, Boston was whistled for too many men on the ice. Simon Gagne found the back of the net with only :18 left on the power play in what ended up being the game winner. Gagne, stationed in front of the net, knocked in a rebound on a Mike Richards’ shot.

The best part about this win for seventh-seeded Philadelphia, besides the obvious moving on to the next round is they have home ice because they play the eight seed.

Both teams in the Eastern Conference Finals are coming off hard-fought, marathon series’. They will get one or two days’ rest then it is right back to work. In the Western Conference Finals the Chicago Blackhawks begin in San Jose.
