You Need Black-Eyed Susans to Earn the Crown
The Preakness is the make or break race for Triple Crown hopefuls. If a Derby winner can earn the black- eyed Susans given to the winning horse, then it is just one more step toward immortality. The last horse to pull off the Triple Crown was Affirmed in 1978. Many believe that this year’s Derby winner Super Saver could be the horse to do it again. In fact Super Saver is going into Saturday’s Preakness as the favorite. He will post in the eighth spot as he makes his run toward everlasting fame.
If Super Saver is feeling the pressure of being the favorite it isn’t showing. In fact he seems to like all of the attention he has earned from his Derby win. Trainer Todd Pletcher may be feeling more butterflies. Having just come off of his first Kentucky Derby win with Super Saver he is now hoping to break through to the winner’s circle of the Preakness. Although he has two shots at ending his 0-4 Preakness streak, he has another horse entered with Aikenite, there’s little doubt that he would rather see Super Saver earn the black-eyed Susans and be one step away from the Triple Crown.
Paddy O’Prado and Lookin At Lucky are the only horses that are close to Super Saver in the pre race odds. With Lookin At Lucky drawing the seventh post position and Paddy O’Prado the 10th, jockey Calvin Borel will be able to see his closest competition when the race gets underway.
If Super Saver likes the attention this week, wait until the level increases if he earns the black-eyed Susans.
