Old Foes in a New League
Written by Daniel Turner, Monday May 10 2010
The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz and the Bossier Shreveport BattleWings are familiar with each other through their arenafootball2 battles. After six meetings in the lower league they brought it to the AFL on Saturday night. The score hungry fans that showed up to witness the battle in OKC left happy with the Dawgz comeback victory.
The Dawgz didn’t start the night well when QB Tommy Grady fumbled the ball on the second play from scrimmage. The BattleWings took quick advantage by scoring on their first possession, but the Dawgz answered that score with their own TD.
From there the offense took off for both teams and the Dawgz took the initiative by converting back to back onside kicks that led to two more TDs. With 33 seconds left in the game the BattleWings attempted a field goal to put the game on ice. The kick was short and returned by Yard Dawgz Timon Marshall for a TD that made the score 82-79 in the Dawgz favor.
The BattleWings got the ball with :04 seconds remaining and attempted a series of laterals in hopes of breaking the plane. Instead, the ball was fumbled and Dawgz Dave Hyland returned it for a TD as the clock expired.
The win put OKC in a tie for second place in their division tied with Shreveport and trailing OK neighbor Tulsa by one game. The Dawgz will clean their kennel and host Spokane on Sunday afternoon. Tulsa held on to first by defeating the Alabama Vipers to snap a two game losing streak.
