Darlington: The Lady in Black Goes Green

Darlington Raceway is known as the track that is too tough to tame and has earned the nickname the Lady in Black because the white walls around the track always bear black rubber marks by race’s end. The track has its weird egg shape because when originally built it neighbored a minnow pond that was not to be disturbed by the construction of the raceway. That tight turn and the resulting extended straights have been the cause of rookie drivers earning their Darlington Stripes resulting from the paint scratched off their rides as they jockey the wall for position. .

Over the years some amendments have been made to the track; for one thing the original pond is gone and a new one was built in its place. However, for the 2010 edition of the Southern 500 the changes are more cosmetic and for the benefit of the patrons.

For one more restrooms have been added. Heeding the long lines that have occurred at past races and possibly fearful of an improvised use of the pond, more facilities have been added in the seating area at turn four that include water saving toilets.

Not only is the Lady going green, she is becoming PC. Family sections have been added to the front and back stretches that are both alcohol and smoke free. For those who don’t sit in the family sections new signage in the parking lots are supposed to make locating your car easier. This was done to help those who in the past have been unable to find their ride after a “long night at the track”. The signs feature legendary drivers so maybe it will be easier to find your car if you remember you parked in the Cale Yarborough section.
