Ditka weighs in on ‘prostitute’ question
Written by G. Shelley, Wednesday April 28 2010
Mike Ditka, the former Chicago Bears coach and all-around living NFL legend, has expressed his opinion about the question wide receiver Dez Bryant was asked in an interview by Miami Dolphins General Manager, Jeff Ireland. Ireland had asked Bryant if his mother was a prostitute, but after that news broke in recent days, Ireland has formally apologized.
Still, in an interview with Dan Le Batard of Miami’s 790 The Ticket, Ditka had this to say:
“I think the individual who asked that question, somebody ought to whack him in the head. You don’t ask that question. If you think you know it, you know. What are you going to confront a young man with that situation for? He probably loves his mother no matter what she is or who she is. Why would somebody do that? I don't understand things like that. Maybe I'm naive or I'm old. I don't understand that. Why? What do you get from asking that question? What's it all about? Every bit of information has to be spread out on the table now? Is that it? Everybody's dirty linen has to be out? I disagree with that. I'm sorry."
Ditka went on to say that he is interested in getting to know a player’s character and that is fundamentally all that he is interested in.
Bryant was drafted in the first round by the Dallas Cowboys. While he had previously told reporters that someone had asked him the question about his mother during the process of interviewing with other organizations, he did not state which specific person or organization had asked it. Someone in the Cowboys’ organization evidently later released the specifics, making it known that it was Ireland.

Terp Fan, please don't tell me that you are dumb enough to believe that football players actually attend classes at major universities. And maybe you should do a little research about this guy's mother. She has a conviction for dealing crack, so exactly how far of a leap is it that he was turning tricks to feed that crack habit? Sorry, but I've had enough of the PC Police.

It is unbelievable to me that anybody could condone such a question about your mother. I don't care how much money the Dolphins were proposing to offer Bryant, it is no excuse to ask a question about someone's mother. Last time I checked B-Dub, Bryant was enrolled at Okla. State. He may be qualified to make you a Geno's cheesesteak once he is done playing in the NFL.

Evidently, B-Dub, plenty of people in the NFL do not agree with you on that one. Still, I guess plenty of folks are in the same boat with you from an outsider's perspective--the mere fact that they make so much money seems to lend itself to the notion that they should put up with anything. And, you are probably correct about the qualifications for fast food--tentative at best, no doubt. But, I just poke fun because he is now a Dallas Cowboys' player.

I don't see anything wrong with asking the question of a player with OBVIOUS red flags about his character. Bryant is not a boy scout and his mother's history is checkered at best. If an organization is going to guarantee a draft pick roughly $20 million, they should be able to ask whatever the hell they want. If the player doesn't like it he can go be the Fry Guy at McDonalds. That is, if he's even qualified to do that.
