Rage, Murder, & Suicide: Edwin Valero

El Inca, as Edwin Valero was called, is no more. The rage this man displayed in the ring apparently was only a small portion of the rage that lived within. He had compiled a perfect professional record of 27 wins, all by knockout, and had set a world record with his first 18 Kos occurring in the first round. Top Rank has been salivating at the anticipation of future mega fights starring the raging southpaw. But the rage would eventually consume his mind, his wife, and himself.

A self-admitted alcoholic, Valero had been charged last month with threatening hospital employees and harassment of his wife, Jennifer Viera, who had been admitted with a punctured lung and broken ribs. Although he was held in suspicion of causing her injuries, Viera told authorities that her injuries were sustained due to a fall.

In any event, a judge issued restraining order forbade the crazed prizefighter to come in close proximity of his wife. To no surprise the orders were ignored.

On March 28th, the former WBA Super featherweight and WBC Lightweight Champion checked himself into a rehab center for alcohol and substance abuse. 21 days later he killed his wife.

He and Viera drove to a Valencia hotel and checked in around midnight. Around 5:30am he walked over to hotel security and simply told them he had killed her.

The body of 24 year-old Jennifer Viera was found dead with multiple stab wounds.

Valero was taken by authorities, and was to be charged with her murder. But Valero found yet another way to escape and evade justice once again.

Using his own clothes, Valero was found hanging in his jail cell  in north central Carabobo state, and died today (4/19) around 1:30am.
