Houston Astros not cleared for take-off
Written by G. Shelley, Monday April 12 2010
In an earlier article, the Houston Astros well-earned “underhyped” nature was detailed. That was before the first game had been played.
Now, we are six games into the season, and the Astros are an embarrassing 0-6. Sure, you might say that 0-6 is not all that embarrassing, but you have to go back almost three decades to find the last Astros team that started so poorly. And, the six losses have all come at home.
To make matters worse, the national media has found it fashionable to amuse itself and the fans with the comparison of the Arizona Diamondbacks’ record-setting 13-run inning to the Astros full first six games in terms of production. The Diamondbacks required one inning to get 13 runs; the Astros have needed all six games to get 13 runs in pursuit of their six losses.
Now, the Astros go on the road to the division leading St. Louis Cardinals for three games, and despite the continued optimism of certain local journalists, this season has all the makings of an infamous one. Again, there is almost no reason for any rational belief, at least one grounded in baseball fact, that this Astros team will win 80 games, let alone manage to even compete for a Wild Card.
But, then again, that was evident before the first pitch was ever thrown.
Of course, the team is not supposed to accept that fact—they should keep playing and keep trying. Get those young guys some more experience. But, someone please tell the organization to stop pretending they made a reasonable attempt to field a truly competitive team. Their losing record is glaring and unfortunately, the players have to carry the weight.

Thanks Chriso! Being in Houston, I resisted that urge, but it is nonetheless very appropriate.
