Boston College Changes Basketball Coaches
Written by Christopher Corazon, Tuesday March 30 2010
Al Skinner is no longer the head coach at Boston College, in a move that the school declares was mutual. Skinner has more wins than any coach in school history. He also saw the school go from the Big East to the ACC, a move that was driven by the football program and was not as good for basketball.
In the Big East, BC had local rivals, including Providence, UConn, and schools in New York. Now, BC's closest rivals are south of the Mason-Dixon Line. For football fans looking for a road trip on the weekend, a trip to Boston in the fall might seem like a good idea. The same cannot be said for a weeknight game in the middle of winter.
Still, the school saw declining attendance as a factor, and the fact that the Eagles have been below .500 in two of the last three seasons. BC athletic director Gene DeFilippo reportedly did not have a problem with the recent reports that Skinner is interested in going to St. John's. BC fired their football coach, Jeff Jagodzinski, when he tried for an NFL job.
