Hind sight is 20/20. All true boxing pundits should smile when analyzing this fight. The scenarios of what could happen, should happen, or will happen are still unknowns. But will we pick the favorite or the future?
This is the tale of two Latin fighters on the rise. One was born in the shade of Santo Domingo, the other dwells in the South American city of “good air”—Buenos Aires. But there will only be one winner when Victor Cayo (24-0-0 [16Kos]) meets Marcos Maidana (27-1-0 [26Kos]) on Saturday, March 25th at the Hard Rock Cafe in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight is only available on HBO.

El Chino, as Maidana is called, is an aggressive orthodox fighter with a very dangerous right hand. His knockout percentage of 92.86% tells the story. He is talented, smart, and has the instincts of a good pressure fighter. If he can draw Cayo into a slugfest, it could be a short night of work. He is the favorite.
Maidana is the same man who out boxed and out willed the Golden Boy product, Victor Ortiz, and made him sound less than “vicious” in his post fight interview with Max Kellerman. It damaged Ortiz’s credibility as the next great Mexican-American junior welterweight, but increased the stock of the heavy handed fighter from Argentina. However, he too kissed the canvas in the first and second round. Freddie Roach once said, “When I study a fighter, I look for habits…” One habit Maidana has is dropping his left hand when firing his explosive right. This could pose a problem.
But can Cayo be to Maidana what Hearns was to Duran? Perhaps not to the same devastating end, but the athletically gifted, 5’11 Dominican has the skill sets to win with a long range jab and effective lateral and head movement.
The bottom line is that for Cayo to win and avoid a K.O., he must continue to move and not tire. He must fight like his nickname, Mermelada, and lay it on thick.
I think Cayo is smart enough not to stand right in front of Maidana. I think he’s smart enough to use his feet to create angles, drop right hands, and get out of harm’s way. I think Cayo can beat Maidana. But if he doesn’t, the numbers say it will most certainly end in a stoppage. The world will find out on Saturday night.
