Meet the Sweet 16

The field of 64 teams in the NCAA tournament has been whittled down to the glory of the Sweet 16 who remain. Syracuse, Kansas State, Ohio State, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Duke all were somewhat expected to make a showing here, as they are all the remaining number one and number two seeds.

Baylor, Michigan State, Xavier, Butler, Purdue, and Tennessee are all six and lower seeds, so no real surprises there, either. However, few could have predicted that Northern Iowa, St. Mary’s, Washington, and Cornell would still be alive.

Northern Iowa was the lowest seeded team among those last four mentioned, pulling off the biggest upset of the tournament so far, eliminating the No. 1 seed overall, Kansas, with a 69-67 victory in the second round.

Eleventh seeded Washington’s ouster of number three New Mexico, number 10 St. Mary’s ouster of number two Villanova, and number 12 Cornell’s ouster of number four Wisconsin were also considerable upsets.
