Top Detroit defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom has scored his 800th career assist in a game against the division rival Nashville Predators. The assist came off of a power-play goal by teammate Tomas Holmstrom in the first period.
"I’m proud of reaching 800 assists," Lidstrom said. "It was great to get it on a night where you’re winning too.” The Wings defeated the Predators, 5-2.
Lidstrom ranks fourth in assists among Detroit Red Wings’s players behind Steve Yzerman, Gordie Howe, and Alex Delvecchio. He becomes the second among the most active players, and is part of an exclusive group consisting of 28 players and 28 of the best players to ever play the game, ranking sixth overall among defenseman.
The Wings drafted the Swedish born Lidstrom in 1989. He currently reigns as team captain with seven goals and 38 assists this season. Lidstrom, 39, became the first European defenseman, and eighth overall, to reach 1,000-career points for defensemen in the halls of NHL history.
Lidstrom is a six-time Norris Trophy winner. He has a total 1,035 career points making him the all-time leading scorer among all active NHL defensemen. Lidstrom has played a total of 1,336 games, all with the Red Wings.
