The 7-time Tour de France winner, Lance Armstrong, is preparing for a shot at an 8th victory by currently racing in the Tour de Murcia. The 5-day Murcia race kicked off Wednesday in Spain with a 103-mile coastal ride around San Pedro del Pinatar.

Armstrong is hoping to focus on improving his time trial speeds this week, something which the powerful mountain rider has not been known for. At 38 and coming off a third-place finish in the Tour de France in 2009, he is looking to get into better shape than last year.

Significant improvement in the flatter sections, particularly the time trials will go a long way toward getting him closer to his dream of winning an 8th Tour. Armstrong said, “Last year, I didn’t train very much on the time trial bike, which was my mistake.”

He will have to wait until Saturday to see if his training this year has paid off. The 13.7-mile time trial for the Murcia will be a good measure.
