Russian President Disappointed by Olympic Performance

Normally a top-two finisher in the medal standings, Russia managed just a sixth-place finish this year, bringing in a total of 15 medals (three gold). The Russian team had more than than their normal monetary backing and expectations were high going into Vancouver. Several officials had an overall goal of 30 medals and a top-three finish in the overall standings.

The real disappointment had little to do with the American and Canadian finish in the medal standings, as they were favorites in these North American hosted games. The biggest embarrassment for the perennial powerhouse, Russia, had to be the fact that Austria and Norway outperformed them. In fact, a total of 10 countries outperformed the Russians in the gold medal count.

Ultimately, the less than stellar performance left Russian President Dmitry Medvedev seeking to hold someone accountable. The first focus of the country’s ire seems to be those responsible for getting the athletes ready. Medvedev stated that he has asked for the resignations of several officials, saying that if he doesn’t see the notices soon, “[he] will help them.”
