76ers Hit a Wall...John Wall
Written by Alexandra924, Wednesday November 03 2010
John Wall "Dougied" his way onto the court during the introduction of the Washington Wizards' starting lineup Tuesday night. But the dance was only Wall's opening act. The number one draft pick gave an electrifying performance in which he led the Wizards to a victory, and overshadowed the 76ers number two pick from the 2010 NBA draft, Evan Turner.
Wall was all over the court in his home debut. He scored 29 points, had 13 assists, nine steals, 8 turnovers and five fouls. Wall's effort pushed the Wizards to a one point overtime victory against Turner and the Sixers.
While Wall's performance wowed the Washington crowed, Turner's play left much to be desired. Turner, who came off the bench, was a non-factor until the second half and scored all of his nine points in the fourth quarter. His stat line-- nine points, six rebounds, one assist and three fouls, was also considerably mute compared to Wall's.
Sixers fans who were excited to see an intense match-up between the number one and two draft picks may be left scratching their heads and wondering if Turner was the right choice. Yes he was.
It is difficult to compare Wall and Turner at this stage of the season, as the two have distinctly different roles for their respective teams. Wall is a starting point guard, team leader and arguably the Wizard's strongest asset. Turner on the other hand, is a reserve swingman trying to find his place on the floor with the 76ers. Turner's play should improve throughout the season and is not something fans need to worry about. But a losing record is.
After losing to Washington the Sixers fall to 0-4 for the first time since the 2001-02 season.
Despite strong performances from Elton Brand, 21 points, nine rebounds and four steals; and Lou Williams, who scored a team high 30 points, the Sixers could not beat the Wizards. Losses to the Miami Heat, Atlanta Hawks and Indiana Pacers are tolerable, but losing to last season's Eastern Conference bottom feeder, the Wizards, should raise eyebrows.
Aside from learning that Wall is the clear front-runner for rookie of the year, we also learned that the Sixers still have some work to do.
