In the biggest upset since the Miracle on Ice the USA hockey team stunned the home ice and gold medal favorite Canadian team 5-3 on Sunday night to advance to the quarterfinals.
Only one day before the 30th anniversary of the unbelievable victory over the Soviet Union in Lake Placid, these underrated Americans were quicker; more disciplined and showed more determination than Canada's team of professional all-stars.
Brian Rafalski scored two goals and helped to set up another goal, and USA goalie Ryan Miller stopped a barrage of 45 shots with 42 saves to close down the door for the Americans.
"I got a lot of goal support from my boys, we really battled for each other," Miller said.
Chris Drury and Jamie Langenbrunner scored to put the U.S. up 4-2 and they held off a merciless late surge by the Canadians that included a power play goal with 3:09 remaining by Sidney Crosby.
Canada was expected to coast into the medal round and win the gold medal. But now, after nearly losing to the Swiss team and being outplayed on home ice by the U.S. Team, even though they still have a chance at the gold medal, they are in a must win situation for the rest of the tournament and would have to play an additional game to get there.
