Denver Nuggets Coach George Karl Has Cancer
Denver Nuggets coach George Karl has been diagnosed with neck and throat cancer and will miss some games while undergoing chemotherapy. Karl revealed the diagnosis, with his doctor by his side, on Tuesday night surrounded by his team and member of the Nuggets organization.
"The treatment began today and in general it's about a six-week treatment of radiation therapy and chemotherapy," Karl said. He expects to miss upcoming games against Golden State on February 25th and against Minnesota on March 10th. He said that assistant Adrian Dantley would lead the team when he's absent.
Karl has coached the Nuggets to the playoffs in each of the last five seasons. His 260 wins since joining the Nuggets in 2005 are the second most in team history. And he coached the West squad in the All-Star game last Sunday.
The Nuggets are 35-18 this season and are leading the Northwest Division.
Karl, who was previously treated for prostate cancer in 2005, said " I think the major desire for me is to kick this cancer's butt."
