The United States kicked off play in the men's Olympic hockey tournament with a 3-1 win over scrappy Switzerland on Tuesday.

The two teams matched each other in a scoreless battle for the first 19 minutes of the game until the Ducks Bobby Ryan broke the deadlock for the United States.

The U.S. seized control of the game in the second period when David Backes of the Blues and Ryan Malone of the Lighting added goals for the United States.  In his Olympics debut, Goaltender Ryan Miller of the Sabres made 14 saves.

Miller's only flaw came with 10:15 remaining in the game. Hnat Domenichelli spoiled his shutout bid with a shot that struck the goalie's outstretched stick and dribbled past him for a power-play goal in the final period.

Miller, who was involved in a dispute with the International Olympic Committee over the “Miller Time” painted on the back of his helmet, was forced to remove the nickname from his mask since it is also a popular beer slogan.

Teammate and fellow goalie Jonathan Quick of the Kings was also told that the “Support Our Troops” slogan from his patriotic-themed mask violated Olympic rules on political propaganda and must be covered up as well.

Because the National Hockey League had games through this past Sunday, the U.S. team had only one practice together and struggled to find their rhythm.

Playing in the smaller NHL size rink the game featured the type of physical play and hard hitting that has usually not been seen during past Olympics which have been played on the larger international ice surface.
