David Howman, the director general of the World Anti-Doping Agency, announced on Wednesday that more than 30 athletes have been barred from competing in the Vancouver Olympics after failing pre-Games drug testing.

"It's a bit like before Beijing, when 70 athletes didn't go to the Games because they had tested positive beforehand," Howman told The NY Times. "The pre-Games testing is pretty intensive. We can say it was effective because there are some athletes who didn't come."

According to the World Anti-Doping Agency, they do not have the specific names of the individual athletes that were barred, or the individual sports in which they compete in at this time.

Mike English, chief of sport performance for the United States Olympic Committee, said that none of the more then 30 athletes who were in fact barred from the games were American athletes.

Despite the fact that the athletes know the risks and that they will be tested prior to the Olympic Games, there are still some of the athletes that will continue to take those risks and do anything possible in order to increase their performances in order to have a chance at winning an Olympic medal.
