Super Bowl Finally More Popular Than M*A*S*H
The New Orleans Saints staved off a fourth-quarter comeback attempt by the Indianapolis Colts, and made an even more impressive stand when they beat down the most-watched TV program of all-time.
The Saints’ victory over the Colts in Super Bowl XLIV is now the most popular TV program in history, edging the final episode of the CBS sitcom M*A*S*H, which averaged about 106 million viewers on Feb. 28, 1983.
The Super Bowl drew 106.5 million.
The M*A*S*H episode was bound to fall, given that the total number of U.S. TV viewers keeps expanding — the U.S. population is 31% larger than it was in 1983.
This was the most-watched NFL season since 1990 and most-watched conference title games since 1982.
In ratings, however, the all-time Super Bowl leader is still San Francisco vs. Cincinnati in 1982, with a rating of 49.1. Sunday’s game ended at 45 percent, up 7 from last year. The final M*A*S*H episode finished with a rating of 60.2%.
