Cleveland Cavaliers Remove Water Fountains Over Health Concerns
Citing concerns over the swine flu, the Cleveland Cavaliers have removed all of the water fountains from Quicken Loans Arena to reduce the spread of bacteria and communicable disease.
"This was done in an effort to foster the most health-safe environment we felt we could provide for our fans," said Cavaliers team spokesman Tad Carper. He said that he is not aware of any other NBA team that has removed water fountains from their arenas. Carper said the team has also significantly increased its cleaning and sanitation procedures throughout the arena in light of what he called the "national health landscape."
Carper said the decision was based on information from several qualified sources, although he did not specify who those sources were. Removing the water fountains was not an attempt to force fans to buy bottled water Carper said. Fans who want a drink of water can now get a 9-ounce cup for free at a concession stand or pay $4 for bottled water.
The team did not consult the city's health department, which does not recommend removing water fountains as a health precaution, said department director Matt Carroll. "I haven't been able to find anything in the whole H1N1 [swine flu] world that says water fountains are a concern," Carroll said.
A message seeking comment from the NBA on Monday was not returned.
