No Winter for Olympics?
Vancouver is welcoming Olympic athletes with open arms as the 21st Winter Games approach. Only five days away from the opening ceremonies, everything seems to be ready, except for one major factor: the weather.
What are the Winter Olympics without the winter part? In recent days, Vancouver has seen unusually warm weather, reaching into the 50’s. Even with snowmaking abilities, practices have been pushed back, and in certain cases, cut short, such as the case with the snowboard halfpipe.
Indoor events will obviously not be affected, but the overall atmosphere will be completely different without the snow cover and cold weather. Forecasters are predicting showers and maybe some light snow in the coming week, with temperatures dropping slightly.
Athletes are arriving to green grass and blossoming trees, to go along with the dark, gloomy clouds overhead. The city of Vancouver is used to relatively mild winters, being so close to the Pacific Ocean, but the warmer weather in the mountains is causing the concern. The North Shore Mountains, which overlook the city of Vancouver, have had one of the warmest January’s on record.
