Bowl Bids Prove Playoffs Needed

With the National Championship game in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on January 7th, Undefeated Alabama and Texas will fight it out for the crown.

As far as I am concerned, this is total hogwash. I will not argue that Alabama probably deserves to be there, but in my mind Texas does not. Their last two games, even though victories were less then stellar and they do not belong there.

The obviously imperfect BCS method of choosing a national champion paired top-ranked Alabama against No. 2 Texas in the BCS title game, that will bring together Heisman Trophy hopefuls Colt McCoy of the Longhorns and Mark Ingram of the Crimson Tide.

Somehow I feel that this was the only reason for allowing Texas into the game. This is a perfect example of why college football needs a playoff system in order to determine the National Champion.

There were five undefeated teams in college football this season and with only two spots in the BCS title game, a playoff would have been the best way to decide the best of the best and the chance to hold up the trophy on January 7th.

Sunday's announced bowl bids have produced enormous amounts of fodder for second-guessing.

No. 3 Cincinnati, No. 4  TCU and No. 6 Boise State also finished their seasons undefeated and without a loss. Even though all three teams were included in the BCS, none of them will have the opportunity to play for the National Championship.

The BCS is a farce and a popularity contest if you ask me. Only the good teams from the major conferences ever have a chance to play for the crown. In my mind it is a predictable outcome that will once again being up the annual debate and arguments about college football's way of deciding who the best team in the land is.

"We absolutely recognize that there were five undefeated teams that had very good seasons, and the fact is, only two could play in the game," BCS executive director Bill Hancock said.

This statement alone proves my point that a playoff system is needed and until there is, the debates and arguments will continue till the end of time.

Oh sure TCU, Cincinnati, and Boise State all received BCS bowl bids, do you really think that these schools are totally happy that they are going to be playing these games for pride and nothing else?

Yeah I know the schools are happy with the payouts that they will be getting, but the teams themselves, the players, the coaches, never see a dime of those payouts. Deep inside, they believe they deserve a shot at the crown, and I intend to agree with them.

Here it is, December 7th, a date which will live in infamy, and there is a month before the title game is played. How difficult would it be to have a playoff system in college football? It is not difficult at all.

Here is my suggestion to the BCS and all of college football.

Take the top 6 teams in college football and put together a playoff scenario.

The top two ranked teams, at this point being Alabama and Texas, would have a bye week, with #3, Cincinnati, would play #6, Boise State and #4, TCU, would play #5 Florida the first weekend after the regular season ends.

The team with the higher ranking would be the home team and play those games at their home stadiums. This would also be additional revenue for those schools as well.

Of course this would give Alabama fans fits because it would give Florida another chance at the title even though they beat them in the SEC Championship game. Oh Boo Hoo, in the NFL two teams in the same division could play each other for the division championship and then face each other again in the playoffs, so deal with it.

Then after the first round of those games, No. 1 Alabama would take on whatever the lowest ranking winning team was with No. 2 Texas playing the other winner the following week.

So for example, let’s say that Cincinnati beat Boise State, and TCU beat Florida, then Alabama would play TCU and Texas would play Cincinnati. Those games would be played at Alabama and Texas respectfully.

Then the winners of those two games would play for the National Championship.

The current BCS system is set for the next four years and nothing will be done until at least then. That is a crying shame in my book. And to hear the BCS officials talk about it, there is nothing really wrong with their system, anyway.

"We do feel like it's working and college football is thriving," BCS executive director Bill Hancock  said. "We recognize there are elements in each constituency that don't like it, but the fact is, it has a consensus. The critics, the playoff proponents, do not have a consensus."

Have you ever heard such a crock of manure in your life? Does this guy actually know what he is talking about. And since when did they hire politicians for these jobs. I know this guy is not actually a politician, but from what he says, he sure sounds like one because he seems to be talking out of the wrong orifice.

My idea seems to be the most logical and fairest way to determine the College football champion and with this playoff system there would be no debates beyond the usual debates of bad play calling, lousy referees, etc. A true Champion would be crowned and the debates would be over!

I believe that once and for all, this should be implemented and implemented soon. Otherwise there will always be doubts as to who the real champion should be. With this system, there would be no doubts, no doubts at all with the best college football team in all the land coming out on top.

There is really no other way! Yet I am sure that some of you will argue my point, but I will not mention any names.

I also like your alternative to the BCS mess, but I agree with Golfnut. I would also prefer a 12 team tournament as I do think a 6 team would exclude too many good teams. But still a great read.

Nolan, I had not thought of a six team format. It sounds logical but I don't believe that gives enough teams a shot. I would prefer a 12 team format with the top 4 drawing byes. I understand that it would have included a boatload of 2 loss teams into the picture for this season, but most years it would be more 1 loss teams. Four more years of BS with BCS. Goodness.
