The Sun Never Sets on the British Empire

While the Brits may have boasted that sentence when they colonized most of the known world, it now applies to the Casino at the Empire. This Empire is located at Leicester Square and is home to the World Series of Poker Europe #3.

The Yanks are coming and they bring a skill level that allows them to fear no conversion rate, but there are some locals who are intent at keeping the pounds and Euros in native hands. The Brits built a lavish gambling palace in Leicester Square and several of their homegrown boyos will be representing the Crown when WSOPE opens September 17 in the Casino at the Empire.

The number one challenger to the US card sharks is Chris Moorman. Moorman is looking to score as heavily in the real world as he has in the virtual land of online gambling. In computer cards Moorman has won over $2M. His haul in casino gambling has netted him $35,000. Currently Moorman is ranked as the #2 on line player, but he has held the top spot. Winning the WSOPE would help to make his face as recognizable as his avatar.

Paul Foltyn is already starting to combine success in tournament events to match his skill at online poker. In 2008 he won the GUPKT main event grand final and netted 138,000 pounds for the effort. In USD his live winnings total $439,000, so he is accustomed to facing down his opponents and could be a factor in the tournament.

Sam Trickett is young, 23, but experienced.  His experience extends to Las Vegas where he played in the 2008 WSOP. The young gun isn’t shy and can’t be scared off. He has already raked in $589,702 with almost half of that coming in Vegas. This kid won’t be frightened by American accents and should represent Queen and Country proudly.

Railroad pensions are nice to have in your old age, but James Akenhead ended his career on the trains after turning pro at poker with stunning results. A second place finish at a 2008 WSOP event earned him $520,000 and an invite back this year. European trains ride faster and smoother than their American counterparts, but a bumpy ride at a table can still allow Akenhead to make more in a day than working on the railroad.

In 2007 James Keys made it to the final table of the WSOPE. In 2008 he cashed in the main event. Like Trickett and Akenhead he has experienced the desert heat of Sin City and lived to tell the tale. Also, like them he is looking to cash in at the Casino at the Empire and keep the money in the land of the monarchy. On September 5 he tuned up for the event by winning the deep stacks tournament of the Dusk Till Dawn event held in the UK.

No one likes to see a stranger ride into town and make off with the pot, so these lads will do their best in the UK stiff upper lip tradition to repel the Yanks and spread the wealth around jolly old England.
