Penn State Recruiting Commits
Written by Nolan Thomas, Tuesday June 30 2009
Penn States recruiting commitments so far are heavy on the offensive side of the ball with seven of their ten recruits so far on that side of the ball.
Miles Dieffenbach-Center
Miles is a very versatile offensive lineman that can play any position of the offensive line. He has good size to be both a solid run or pass blocker. As a center, he is a consistent snapper from both the shotgun or with quarterback under center. He has very quick hands and gets them into the defenders frame right off the snap. He demonstrates good footwork in all phases of blocking, and shows the ability to pull from the center position. He possesses very good strength and with good leg drive. He is a mature offensive lineman that understands the game that gives an excellent effort on every play.
Adrian Coxson-WR
Silas Redd-RB
Silas should be regarded as a legitimate national running back prospect with his good blend of speed to go along with his in-line toughness. He is always going forward and picking up yards even when in his cuts. He is a tough north-south downhill runner with the quickness to make defenders miss in the hole. He has good feet and body control to go along with his jumping, cutting and change-of-direction skills. He has excellent vision and sees the holes open quickly. He has an explosive second gear and he has excellent balance. He has the moves to spin and bounce in order to avoid tackles and is difficult to wrap up. He is an impressive athlete with game game-changing ability.
Paul Jones-QB
Paul has excellent size and is a pocket passer with good overall athleticism. He plays in a pro-style scheme that enables him to operate both the three and the five-step drops. He also works well off of play-action and running bootlegs. He has prototypical size and excellent arm strength that can zip the ball down field and fit the ball into tight coverage. He has shown the presence to find secondary receivers when he is forced out of the pocket, and can make plays when the pocket collapses. He has excellent accuracy on all his passes, and he will lead his receivers in order for them to make a play after the catch. He has a very quick release and he shows the composure to stand in the pocket when pressured and beat the rush with a quick pass.
Tom Ricketts-OG
Ricketts is a very good athletic player at the guard position. His technique and explosion are just what you look for in a major college competitor. He displays quickness coming out of his stance with good base and leg drive. He is both a pulling guard as well as a trapping guard blocker. He shows quickness taking on and sustaining blocks vs. blitzing linebackers. He can stop there charge and knock them back to where they came from. This is a tough, aggressive offensive lineman with a mean streak and a desire to finish blocks. He should benefit from a red shirt year, after which he should develop into a solid starter.
DaQuan Jones-OG
Jones can use his size and playing strength as a good run blocker. He comes off the ball with quickness and explosion with a good leg drive. He can both pull and trap, is very good out of his stance and turns up field to find defenders in the open field. He is an aggressive run blocker who looks for second defenders down the field and finishes off his blocks with authority. Jones is a strong football player who will not be an immediate starter or impact player but eventually he should become a solid starter.
Luke Graham-OG
Graham is a tremendously athletic player who stands at 6-foot-5 and weighs 245 pounds. He has a 75-inch wingspan and comes off the ball with quickness and explosion with a good leg drive. He shows quickness taking on and sustaining blocks and is very good in both run and pass blocking. He is considered to have a serious upside and has the ability to be an impact as a freshman.
Evan Hailes-DT
Hailes shows flashes of good quickness off the ball and he will surprise you at times at how quickly he gets of the ball. He can plow his way into the backfield and cause havoc and does a good job of getting into a gap and plugging it up. When he uses his hands he can knock a blocker on his back and be a very disruptive player who is very difficult to move backwards. He can bull rush the passer and collapse the pocket around him. Hailes is a big kid who is a two-gap run stuffer but can cause problems in the backfield on passing plays.
Kyle Baublitz-DE
Kyle shows a lot of promise at defensive end. He is physical and shows the ability to be active with his hands. He displays good lateral movement in order to side-step blocks and shows a good feel for the game. He takes good angles in pursuit and closes on the ball carrier quickly. He is a physical tackler who gets into space and can read and react to the play. Depending on needs, Baublitz could play on either side of the ball as he also played tight end in high school, but defensive end seems like the more logical position for him in college.
