Texas Football Recruiting, Still #1 in Commitments

The Texas Longhorns have done nothing to alter their reputation for picking up early recruiting prospects. Texas' Mack Brown used to have the nickname "Coach February" for two reasons. The first reason was because of his early recruiting success and that has continued this year in recruiting for the 2010 class.

The second reason was for his failures in the big games. Now that Brown has led Texas to a national championship and had numerous BCS bowl appearances, that gone no longer be associated with the title “Coach February. However, his recruiting dominance in February is not and the title sticks. Texas already has a recruiting class worthy of an “A+” in any grading system.

Nobody in the nation is better at early recruiting than Mack Brown and Texas, and in February, once again, the Longhorns flexed their muscles and had a monstrous month recruiting.

In February alone, the Longhorns had 10 commitments, and currently lead the nation right now with 19 total verbal commitments for 2010.

They invited a select group of top juniors to Austin for their annual "Junior Day," in February and the Longhorns locked in 10 commitments from some of the best players in the state of Texas.

They have completed their second junior day and currently have a nation leading 19 commitments and there are still a few of the big catches still out there which are still very distinct possibilities to commit to Texas very shortly as well. .

So what else is new? If ever there were a spokesperson for an early signing period, it would be Mack Brown and his Texas program. In addition, the most important fact in all of this is that Texas scored a bull’s-eye in the process.

They got a quarterback in Garrett Gilbert from Austin, Texas and an offensive lineman in  Trey Hopkins from Galena Park, Texas. They scored a cornerback in Marcus Davis from League City, Texas who is very physical and talented. They also cored big on a tight end, in Barrett Matthews from Houston, Texas. It comes as a real surprise that this kid is not talked about more. Texas also received a verbal commitment from RB Chris Whaley from Madisonville, Texas, and if he works out as planned, then Texas may have solved their running back need. In the end though, it is possible that Whaley could switch positions and end up on defense.

Safety Ahmad Dixon was another one of the players who pledged to the Longhorns that day in February. His commitment could go down as one of the steals in this class. Dixon is rated as one of the top players in the whole state of Texas.

"I like how the coaches click together," Dixon said. "It's like a big family, a home away from home."

Within a 72-hour period, Texas rocked with 10 commitments. A wild and wily weekend should show much success down the road for the Texas Longhorns, as they put a tight grip on many of the top 2010 players from Texas.
