Why Sports Fans Are Here
Written by Nolan Thomas, Monday June 01 2009
Sports fans are some of the most animate people on earth. They are the most passionate, defensive, joyous, frustrated, depressed, exuberant, energized, inspired, and loyal people on this wonderful planet of ours. Because of this, I have decided to put together the top ten reasons why sports fans are here.
10. Sports fans are here to start pools, charts, and brackets in March for college basketballs ultimate spectacle, March Madness. The excitement that this NCAA college basketball tournament creates with lots of competitive games going on all month, the race to the final four is a thrill ride for all college basketball fans. It is extremely enjoyable and stressful all rolled into one as teams battle it out for a chance at the final four. Time for a T.O. babeee!
9. Sports fans are here to listen to their favorite teams on the radio in their cars and totally ignore the strange looks they get from other drivers. Strange looks as they pound on the steering wheel, yell at the top of their lungs as their team drops a touchdown pass, strikes out with the bases loaded, or misses two easy free throws to tie the game. On another hand, they totally ignore the strange looks they get as they scream and yell, pound on the dashboard and jump around in their car like an escapee from the local mental institution when their team pulls off an unprecedented victory over a team that was favored to win by 25 points.
8. Sports fans are here to watch Sidney Crosby set up behind the oppositions net on a power play causing the goalie to get whiplash wondering what side he will be attacked from. Crosby passes the puck to the left circle as the left-winger turns in the circle, passes the puck back to the defensemen at the blue line who slides the puck back to Crosby who is just below the left circle. He winds up and shoots a vicious slap shot right through the goaltenders legs just inside the far right post for a dramatic game winning goal as the third period ends. He shoots, he scores!
7. Sports fans are here to watch Jimmy Johnson on a concrete track over take drivers one by one and pick off the drivers in front of him until all that is left ahead of him is two other drivers. To watch him constantly nip at those drivers, lap after lap, until the final lap when he finally makes his move through a hole that does not seem large enough for a motorcycle, much less a stock car. Then with a cat like move, he soars past both drivers with one final outside pass for a thrilling finish. Just another weekend Sprint Cup series victory on a Sunday afternoon.
6. Sports fans are here to watch Tiger Woods line up a 40-foot eagle putt for the win on the 18th green that will break at least twice on its way to the cup. He carefully stands over the ball, steps back once more to check the putt, lines up over the ball again, looks at the cup and then with a smooth yet firm stroke putts the ball towards the hole. The ball rolls swiftly through the first break and then the second. It loses steam as it heads towards the hole and looks as if it is right on target. It reaches the hole and for a split second, it stops just at the edge of the hole. As time stands still for what seems like an eternity, the ball slowly and finally falls into the cup for the tournament victory.
5. Sports fans are here to watch Lebron James take an inbound pass with .05 seconds left in the game and down by two. He sprints away from the basket out past the three-point line, catches the inbounds pass at the height of his leap, turns and jumps right back up as if he is on a diving board and lets the shot go. The world seems as if it is in slow motion as the ball ever so slowly spins towards the basket. Will you hear the clunk of the ball hitting the rim or the swoosh as the ball falls through the basket with nothing but net while the buzzer sounds?
4. Sports fans are here to watch Albert Pujols at the plate against closer Trevor Hoffman in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs, down by three runs, the bases are loaded and the count is 3-2. With the next pitch you hear the crack of the bat and the ball sales towards the left field wall with the left fielder watching the ball with great anticipation as to when he can leap into the air with his glove over the top of the wall to possibly make the catch. Either way, the game is over!
3. Sports fans are here to watch Tom Brady avoid a massive pass rush on fourth down with the clock running down and the game on the line. To watch Brady throw a perfectly thrown pass down the right sideline to Randy Moss between two defenders. To watch Moss step out of bounds after making a tremendous one-handed grab and getting both feet down in bounds. The clock stops with .02 left. Just enough time to set up the game winning field goal try.
2. Sports fans are here to walk out of Wrigley Field in
1. Sports fans are here to follow the teams they grew with up no matter what. They loyally follow those teams for their whole life regardless of how good or how bad they were or are. Regardless of how many championships they have won or not won. They are loyal to a fault, are extremely passionate about their teams because those teams are in their hearts and they will root for them for the duration of their lives regardless of where they may end up living later on in life. Their home teams will always be the teams they grew up with. Loyal sports fans never switch teams just because they moved to a different city. And that is the way it should be.
It doesn’t get any better then this!
