Ohio State Recruiting Class 2010
Written by Nolan Thomas, Tuesday May 26 2009
So far, for the class of 2010,
Andrew Norwell OT
Norwell is very physical on the offensive line. He has tremendous size and uses his strength and power in the run game. He is a solid run blocker. He has good fundamentals when blocking and sustains contact. He is excellent at double team blocking and moves quickly off the line of scrimmage. He has long arms, which are a big benefit in pass protection as he can keep pass rushers off his body.
Due to limited foot agility, Norwell’s will have to prove that he can be a good edge pass protector. If he can prove he can shuffle and change direction in pass protection, he could be a real behemoth on the line. At this point, the guard position or right tackle would be hid best position. As time goes on and he improves his foot quickness he could develop into a solid left tackle.
Jamel Turner OLB
Turner is a defensive end / outside linebacker who could make an excellent OLB in a 3-4 defense. He has good acceleration in order to cover a lot of ground from sideline to sideline. He has a long wingspan and is very effective at separating from blockers at the point of attack. As an edge rusher in a 3-4, he can be formidable and cause havoc in the backfield. He is very active and has good acceleration with closing speed when playing as a linebacker.
Turner does lack size as a defensive end and he needs to be more explosive at the snap. He needs to bulk up, add power, and play with better leverage. He has a tendency to over-pursue and could struggle diagnosing the run. He will likely start off at outside linebacker and if he improves his size, he could be a defensive end down the road.
David Durham DE
J.T. Moore DE
Scott McVey ILB
McVey may not have great size or speed on the stat sheets, but he is an excellent football player. He has a great nose for the football with a relentless motor from sideline to sideline. He shows has great first-step quickness along with closing speed and the ability to chase someone down. Her can cover a lot of ground quickly and achieves great acceleration when closing. He is a hitter and dishes out the blow of a much bigger defender as a strong impact tackler. He reads and reacts quickly and can beat linemen with a good rush and his quickness. He shows competent coverage skills.
McVey has a slight deficiency of adapting when playing in space. At times, he can show wasted motion when turning and changing direction. He shows better short-range speed than he does from sideline-to-sideline. He has had some problems when teams run right at him and does not show good shedding techniques.
