Roulette Not the Game of Choice!

Compared to all of the other casino games in the world, in America, roulette is one of the least popular games, especially when compared to slot machines, video poker, blackjack, and craps.

Roulette is more popular then baccarat, but mostly because baccarat is mostly only open to high stakes players. In addition, roulette also has the chance to lose popularity from more recently introduced games such as Caribbean Stud Poker and Let It Ride.

Although in Europe, popularity of the game is huge. It is one of the anchors of European resorts and casinos.

The reason for this is because the Americana wheel and the European roulette wheels are different. The European wheel has 36 numbers on it plus a single 0; the American wheel has 36 numbers on it plus 0 and 00. All bets placed at both the American and European wheels odds at winning would only be true if the 36 numbers existed on the wheel. The house advantage in roulette comes from the 0 on the European wheel and the 0 and 00 on the American wheel.

You can always tell an American roulette wheel because of the 00. The European wheel does not have the 00. Thus the house advantage on the American wheel is higher then the European wheel.

This is the main reason that American roulette players resist playing roulette. The house advantage of 5.26 percent on all bets but one and carries a 7.89 percent edge to the house. European roulette players face only a 2.7 percent on all bets, and that falls to 1.4 percent on even-money bets by a rule called en prison. Basically, with the en prison rule, if you wager on the outside bets and 0 comes up, they simply take half your bet instead of all of it. At 1.4 percent, the game of roulette becomes competitive with other casino games and at 5.26 percent, it is still a very difficult casino game to beat.

There are a few European wheels in use in American casinos, but the majority of these wheels is limited to high-staked players and requires larger minimum bets than those playing with American wheels. Therefore, any roulette player that wants to make higher bets should attempt to find an American casino that has a European wheel on hand.

Even with the higher house advantage on an American roulette wheel, the majority of casino customers will at least play a few spins eventually. It can be a fun and relaxing way to waste a little time. Although for most people, it also wastes some of their money.

The dealer will usually give players a lot of time to choose their bets with the dozens of betting combinations available. It then takes time to spin the wheel and the ball before it stops and a winner is declared.

Therefore, because roulette moves at a slower pace then craps, which has about 100 or so rolls every hour and blackjack with around 60 hands every hour, roulette moves along at a slower pace, with around 45 spins every hour.  This means that the roulette player has to make fewer decisions every hour. A roulette player whose average bet is $5 per spin can expect their losses per hour to be only a little bit higher than an average player at a blackjack table who does not really know the basic strategy of the game.
