It would not be too difficult to give the description of surfing if you crave the excitement and unpredictable forces of the ocean. If you feel the need and the freedom to conquer one of natures great forces, surfing can bring you to a place and a feeling that you have never experienced before. It is another world riding the waves, an addiction like drugs. Surfing is a natural high where no narcotics are needed.

However, surfing without great waves is as bad as drinking warm beer. Here are 10 surefire places where the waves are excellent and the beer is cold.

1. Gold Coast, Australia

There is no doubt that Australia has some of the best beaches and best waves, which of course are the perfect intangibles for a surfer. Gold Coast City is in the southeast corner of Queensland and is well known for its sunny subtropical climate and popular surfing beaches. It has been called the surfers paradise and there are numerous beaches with great waves.

2. Mentawai Islands, Indonesia

The Mentawai Islands are one of the most consistent wave-rich chains and most consistent surf destinations in the world. These islands have become one of the most noted destinations for wave-hunters with some of the most perfect surfing experiences in the world.

3. Jeffreys Bay, South Africa

In the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, is one of the most famous surfing destinations in the world. Especially great during the winter months, surfers come here for a great ride on beaches like Super Tubes, Boneyards, Kitchen Windows, Magna Tubes, Point and Albatross. Jeffreys Bay is also well known for its blue flag beaches and for hosting the annual Billabong Pro WCT surfing event at Supertubes during July.

4. Fuerteventura, Spain

Part of the Canary Islands located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa, Fuerteventura is also known as the Mecca of surfers. Surfers visiting the island should be extremely happy with the weather conditions, no matter what time of the year they ride the waves there.

5. El Salvador

El Salvador is gaining more and more popularity with surfers because they are not very crowded. No sharing the waves at this hot spot. The main season is from March to October. Experienced surfers should expect the south swells during this time when the waves get up to 10 feet.

6. Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a legendary surfing location. Mostly hardcore and experienced surfers go there because of the consistent waves year round and the many great surf spots. Both coastlines produces great waves. For surfers, this could be the trip of your life.

7. California, North America

In North America, California is the place to be. The big wave hunters go to places like the mountains of Maverick during the huge winter swells. If you just want to enjoy a good wave but you are not into big waves then a spot between Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay is great. The only drawbacks are that the water is cold all year round and the surfing spots are going to be crowded with very good surfers.

8. Bali, Indonesia

Bali is a great place for surfers looking for the big waves. With the swells coming from the Southern Ocean, waves reach up to 12 ft high, from April to November. The main disadvantage is that it is pretty crowded and you may get badgered a lot.

9. Santa Catarina, Brazil

The island is generally considered to be blessed with the best Brazil has to offer to a surfer with great wave consistency along with a huge variety of waves. In the 1970’s surfers from around the world discovered its waves and have enjoyed them ever since.

10. Samoa

Samoa is one of the best surfing destinations in the world. The water is warm and produces consistently quality waves. There are plenty of swells from every direction all twelve months. The best time to surf though is from April to October, when the waves are created by the big lows down towards Antarctica. This is when the waves reach their biggest.

These are all great places to be if you are an avid wave hunter, so pack your bags, grab your board and have a great surfing experience. No flounders at these great spots.
