H.S. Basketball: Roaring Through the Playoffs
The Lions of Yates, Houston, TX left their claws marks all over the # 1 spot on the Max Prep High School Basketball rankings as they continue to steam roll through the playoffs in their region. Latest to feel their might was Kimball, Dallas, TX as the Kings of the Jungle mauled them in a 94-78 pummeling.
The Dallas/Fort Worth area came in well represented, but Yates has extended their Houston based superiority. However, Dallas shouldn’t take it personal since Yates spent the regular season throttling their Houston based opponents, too. At 35-1 Yates has spread the joy of losing to them around the state. Their only loss occurred on December 20 when they were beaten 76-78 by Alief Elsik, Houston. Other than that glitch their season has seen them rack up 30+ point wins with regularity. Included is a 99-39 whipping of Westbury in a game that surely tested the argument for inserting the mercy rule into high school hoops.
2. West Chester, Los Angeles, CA: The Comets hate to see other teams score against them. Outside of surrendering over 70 points in two games, no one else has gotten beyond the ‘60’s with this team. They’ve been cruising through the playoffs and face McClymonds, Oakland, CA on March 21. Their record is 34-2.
3. King, Riverside, CA: The Wolves are one of those teams who couldn’t score points against West Chester. A 39-56 loss to the Comets leaves them at 30-3 and bowing out of the playoffs. The Southern Section champs were perfect at home and suffered only one league loss before being placed on the endangered species list by West Chester. King played a team oriented system that allowed them success without having any player in the top five statistical categories in the league.
4. Oak Hill Academy, Mouth of Wilson, VA: The Warriors completed their season on a perfect note. A 69-63 victory over Montrose Christian, Rockville, MD capped their 38-0 season. Several triple digit scores allowed them to amass 3,125 points for the season and paved the way to perfection. They capped their perfect season and remained #1 in Virginia when they beat Montrose for the second time in a game that drew over 1,500 and was televised nationally.
5. Findlay Prep, Henderson, NV: The Findlay Pilot ended their season in February with a 30-0 record. They closed their campaign with a stunning victory over Village, Houston, TX by a score of 57-107. The Pilot was deadly on both ends of the floor as they recorded several triple digit scores while holding the majority of their opponents to less than 60 points. These boys are true road warriors as they recorded wins in California, Texas, Ohio, Florida and North Carolina. Having held their 30 foes to a combined point’s total of 1,513 Findlay may find they are not welcome in too many states next season. The Pilot achieved this level of success in spite of having to suspend their premiere forward Victor Rudd and then saw him leave the school when he refused to follow the guidelines for reinstatement on the team.
