PBR: The Vaqueiro Rides Tall
Vaqueiro is Portuguese for cowboy and Guilherme Marchi is the number one cowboy in Kansas City, MO. In fact, Marchi loves Kansas City. Maybe it’s those KC steaks, although he better not tell his rides if that is the reason. Whatever the cause, Marchi has captured the title in the Show Me State’s PBR event for two years running.
On March 7-8 Marchi entered KC looking for his first win of the season. The native of Leme, SP, Brazil had three successful rides over the weekend and left with the event title. Marchi’s weekend point total was 267 and he pocketed $36,642.50 while moving up to 3rd overall in the Built Ford Tough World Standings.
Marchi finished 3rd in the first round when he scored 87.5 points aboard Velvet Elvis. The bull with the cool name held Marchi to his weekend lowest point total. After getting comfortable with the ride from Diamond S. Bucking Bulls, Marchi climbed onto Stiffler for the second round. This ride paid off with a second place finish and 89.5 points. Ride number two was supplied by Boyd/Floyd Bull Company. Steadily climbing, Marchi drew another Diamond S. Bucking Bull, Big Iron for the final round. Like the Texas Ranger in the Marty Robbins song that inspired the bull’s name, Marchi tamed this outlaw with a ride that earned him 90 points. His apt handling of the top rated bull earned him number one for the final round and the overall top ranking in the event. Guilherme Marchi included thanks to his rides, their suppliers and his faithful KC fans as he accepted the event championship.
Ross Coleman of Molalla, OR; a Pacific Northwest favorite who is quickly earning a reputation throughout the circuit captured second place and secured a cash prize of $15,320.50 along with a point total of 263 for the weekend. Marchi’s fellow Brazilian vaqueiro, Robson Palermo, Rio Branco, Arce, Brazil, finished in third place with 261.75 points and $10,664.50.
Marchi also collected a $5,000.00 bonus from Ford Trucks for winning the event. He is eligible to win a 2009 F-150 if he secures the PBR championship. Most of the other corporate sponsored bonus money reverted back to the bull owners since the eligible riders were thrown before the eight second mark.
Marchi is in third place in the overall standings trailing Kody Lostroh, 4,914.25 points, in first and second place J.B. Mauney with 4,496.5 points. Marchi’s total point standing is 4,026.75.
KC was the 13th event on the PBR schedule. Event 14 takes place this weekend in Birmingham, AL. The venue is the BJCC Arena and the dates are March 14-15. Forty riders are signed for the event. As usual, the finals will take place in Las Vegas, NV. The dates for the Thomas & Mack Center are October 3—November 1 and November 5-8.
In between AL and Vegas are 18 more events. Included is a stop in Pueblo, CO on May 16-17. Featured along with the riding will be a Wild West Parade and the announced Marshall is NFL legend John Elway. Elway has said he is proud to be a part of the PBR tour and looks forward to both marshalling the parade and attending the riding. Eight seconds ducking NFL linemen probably look a lot easier when compared to the rides that Marchi handled in KC.
