The 2016 season has turned out to be a great season for underdogs.
For starters, the loveable losers, the Chicago Cubs won their first World Series in 108 years. The Cubs ran away with the Division title with 103 wins, dispatched the San Francisco Giants 3-1 in the NLDS and the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-2 in the NLCS to send them to the World Series for the first time in 71 years.
But then they fell behind in the World Series three games to one against the Cleveland Indians and the fans were thinking the curse of the goat took over again. But the Cubs fell behind 3-1 against the Cleveland Indians in the World Series and were now huge underdogs to win it all.
But they stormed back to win the next two games and send the series to a game seven. The Cubs looked as if they were going to cruise to victory but the Indians tied the game with three runs after two were out in the 8th inning.
The goat had reared its ugly head once again but after a rain delay the Cubs scored two runs in the 10th inning to win the series and send Cubs fans into pandemonium everywhere.
Next Underdog up is the Clemson Tigers. While Clemson was ranked No. 1 to start the season, it didn’t take long for Alabama to take over the top spot and remain there for the rest of the season.
After all, Alabama was blowing out opponents by an average of 27 points, Clemson, while still winning had six games which were decided by 7 points or less and they lost to an unranked opponent at home against Pittsburg 43-42 on a last second field goal.
They still made the college football playoffs after beating Virginia Tech in the ACC Championship and had to take on powerhouse Ohio State in the first playoff game. The Buckeyes were favored to win the game but the Tigers blew them out 31-0 to advance to the National Championship against, once again, Alabama.
And naturally Alabama was again favored to win the game as every team was the underdog against the Crimson Tide. The Tigers fell behind quickly by two touchdowns and were trailing 24-14 at the start of the 4th quarter.
Under Nick Saban Alabama had never lost a game when leading by double digits going into the 4th quarter. But Clemson roared back to take the with 4:38 left in the game but Alabama came right back to claim the lead once again with just over two minutes to play.
Clemson would not die as they drove 68 yards in nine plays and scored the winning touchdown with one second to play. It was a game for the ages and the king is dead!
The last underdog of the season is not sports related but it still is a huge win for the underdogs and that is Donald J. Trump!
