A just in case scenario.

The Chicago Bears signed former Notre Dame star quarterback Jimmy Clausen on Thursday to add to the Jay Cutler backup competition.

Clausen was on injured reserve last season with the Carolina Panthers and has not played a down in the regular season since he had 10 starts as a rookie in 2010. Since Cam Newton was drafted in 2011 Clausen has done nothing but hold a clipboard.

Currently the Bears No. 1 shot for the No. 2 job is Jordan Palmer, brother of Carson, and he hasn’t taken too many regular season snaps in his NFL career either. The Bears staff says they are confident that Palmer can do the job if called upon.

My opinion is that they brought in Clausen just in case in addition to having another quarterback on speed dial if the need arises during the regular season.
