Draft Chat with Harvard's Nnamdi Obukwelu.

Nnamdi Obukwelu is a durable player who played in 40 career games with 30 starts for Harvard. He excels on the field with his speed, physical strength and his ability to stop the run. Nnamdi was named All-Ivy League and preseason All-Ivy League three years in a row from 2011-2013 and was also named to the 1st All-Ivy League Team last season. Nnamdi won the George "Bulger" Lowe award which honors the Best Defensive Player in New England and was a key cog of the Harvard team that was Ivy League Champions in 2011 and 2013.
 
Draft previews vary on Nnamdi but he is projected to be between a 5th and 7th round draft choice in the upcoming NFL draft in May.
 


Q: What is the fondest memory of your college career?
 
A: Winning the two conference championships that we won because our team was 9-1 both seasons and they stand out in my mind as my fondest memories. Also, winning the Bulger Lowe award this past season. The Bulger Lowe award is the New England Heisman trophy. 
 
 
Q: Who was the toughest competitor you faced in college?
 
A: Miles Dieffenbach the LG from Penn State.
 
 
Q: What was your best game in college?
 
A: My best game in college has to against Penn State last season when I had something like 15 tackles. The game plan was great and it was just one of those games where I put everything together.
 
 
Q: What colleges recruited you out of high school?
 
A: UVA, Boston College, Duke, Bryant University and all of the Ivy League schools as well.
 
 
Q: What made you choose Harvard?

A: A couple of things. My brother was already on the team and I knew the coaches and the team pretty well. Also because my parents were immigrants from Nigeria and having their two sons play at the same school was a dream for them.
 
 
Q: What was your favorite NFL team growing up?
 
A: I grew up in Boston so I grew up a Patriots fan.
 
 
Q: Who was your favorite player?
 
A: When I was really young it was Willie McGinest and as I got older it was Vince Wolfork.
 
 
Q: Which current NFL player most resembles you?
 
A: A lot of times my position coach would show me tapes of Vince Wolfork and I think because of that and the strength he plays with would make him the player I most resemble.
 
 
Q: What will distinguish you from other rookies?
 
A: I think for me it would be my maturity, my attention for detail and how I take pride in what do.
 
 
Q: What would your former teammates say about you?
 
A: That I was a great leader. Sometimes I was vocal but I led by my play on the field. That my teammates could turn to me for advice at any time.
 
 
Q: What are you presently doing as far as training?
 
A: I am training at Harvard five days a week with James Frazier my college strength coach.
 
 
Q: How do you think you will do on your pro-day?
 
A: I think I’m going to great, I working really hard and am in the best shape of my life. I thin k that I am definitely going to open some eyes.
 
 
Q: Which is your favorite event?
 
A: I would have to say the bench press.
 
 
Q: How was the agent selection process for you?
 
A: I took my time with it, talked with friends that had gone through it and listen to their advice about picking someone that I trusted and felt most comfortable with.  
 
 
Q: Why did you choose John Hernandez and Agency Athlete?
 
 
A: John was the most honest with me and told me how it is and not what he thought I wanted to hear. I trusted him and felt that he would do the most work for me.
 
Q: If you could have dinner with any three people, dead or alive, who would they be and why?
  1. Bill Belichick just to see if I could make him laugh…just once.
  2. Kanye West, I’m a huge fan of his music.
  3. Reggie White just because I watched him a lot growing up and I hear is that he was an upstanding gentleman and I would like to talk with him. 
 
 
Q: What do you want to do besides football?
 
A: I studied economics in college so I would initially work in finance and would like to work on economic inequality and see what I can do to fix it.
 
 
Q: What do you like to do for fun?
 
A: I’m a meat head, I love to work out, like to read, watch movies and I love to travel.
 
 
Q: If you were a dog, what breed would you be and why?
 
A: I have always been fascinated by huskies. They are very mysterious creatures and are very athletic and can be aggressive at times but can also be reserved.
 
 
Q: What is your favorite sport besides football? 
 
A: Basketball. I grew up playing a lot of Basketball. Up until high school I strictly played basketball before starting to play football.
