You might not know the name Dr. Frank Jobe, but you've certainly heard about the famous surgical procedure that he invented, Tommy John Surgery.

Dr. Frank Jobe died on Thursday in Santa Monica, California at the age of 88.  If that name doesn't sound familiar, maybe you'll recognize his work.  Jobe invented the surgical procedure known as "Tommy john Surgery".

Jobe performed that groundbreaking surgery on Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher, Tommy John, on Sept. 25, 1974.  Baseball would never be the same again.

"Today I lost a GREAT friend," John tweeted.

Until Jobe's revolutionary procedure, a ruptured medial or ulnar collateral ligament in an elbow was seen as a career-ender.  But Jobe, who was the Dodgers' team physician at the time, decided to use a ligament from John's forearm to repair the torn one in his elbow.  And the rest, as they say, is history.

Now, Tommy John surgery is almost commonplace.  Jobe originally estimated that John had less than a 5 percent chance of returning to the big leagues.  "When he did come back, I thought maybe we could do it on somebody else," Jobe told the Associated Press in 2010.  "I waited two years to try it somebody else, but we had no idea we could do it again."

Now, pitchers who have the surgery are fully expected to return within 12-18 months as good as new.  Sometimes, pitchers come back even better, with increased velocity.

"His wisdom elevated not only the Dodgers, but all our clubs," MLB Commissioner Bud Selig said.  "Dr. Jobe's expertise made the national pastime stronger."

Last July, the Baseball Hall of Fame honored Jobe during its induction weekend, with Jobe in attendance.  He is survived by his wife Beverly, children Christopher, Meredith, Cameron and Blair, and eight grandchildren.

R.I.P. Dr. T.J.S.  Baseball players and fans everywhere owe you a debt of gratitude.
