A little compromize gets it done.

The Chicago Cubs and starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija avoided arbitration and agreed to a one-year, $5.345 million deal on Saturday.

Samardzija was the last arbitration-eligible player for the Cubs that was left to be signed.

It looked as if Samardzija would be headed for an arbitration hearing on Monday but Cubs president Theo Epstein got it done. Since becoming Cubs president, Epstein has not had a single player go to arbitration.

Samardzija originally filed for $6.2 million, while the Cubs were offering $4.4 million.
