Super Bowl XLVIII Stats and Stuff Part III - The Rivalry

People tend to forget that the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos were once in the same division.  Well the one-time rivals are making Super Bowl history on Sunday.

It's not often that Super Bowl opponents have a long history with each other, since the teams come from different conferences and don't play each other regularly.   This year, however, it's a bit different.  That's because the Seattle Seahawks used to be in the old AFC West with the Denver Broncos, remember?

When the Seahawks joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1977, they were placed in the AFC West.  They played in the AFC from 1997 through 2001 and played the Broncos twice a year until the Seahawks were shifted to the NFC West.  While the teams have met just four times since 2001, they have played a total of 52 times against each other.  That represents the most times that two Super Bowl opponents have ever faced each other.

I'm old enough to remember those days, when Jim Zorn and Steve Largent faced off against Karl Mecklenburg and Tom Jackson.  Or even when John Elway and Terrell Davis faced off against Joe Nash and Brian Bosworth (remember him?).  And I'd also like to go on record right now as saying that both team's uniforms were much cooler back in the day.

Denver leads the series, 34-18 and has outscored the Seahawks 1,222 to 1,011 in those 52 games.  The Broncos obviously dominated the expansion Seahawks early in the rivalry by winning seven of the first ten games, including the first four.  But the teams have only met once before in the postseason.  In 1983, the Seahawks beat the Broncos 31-17 in a wild card game on Christmas Eve behind Dave Kreig and Curt Warner.

The Seahawks would like a repeat of that outcome to be able to bring their first Championship back to Seattle.  The Broncos just want to add another Super Bowl trophy to their case, led by yet another Hall of Fame quarterback.  They also would like to continue their history of dominating the Seahawks.

I wonder where "The Boz" will be watching the game.
