But what will kickers do?
Have you ever heard of the old saying if it isn’t broke don’t fix it? Roger Goodell hasn’t. The NFL commissioner is talking about making some pretty major changes to the point after play.
“The extra point is almost automatic,” Goodell said. “I believe we had five missed extra points this year out of 1,200 some odd (attempts). So it’s a very small fraction of the play, and you want to add excitement with every play.”
One proposed solution has the traditional kick being abolished, a touchdown being worth seven points, but than an additional play being run to give the scoring team an additional point, but if you fail to convert you lose one.
In theory it sounds like an interesting proposal, but as of yet there is no reason to think that it will happen. Yes, more often than not nothing happens during an extra point attempt, but failed or blocked attempts have also been some of the biggest plays of the season.
