With Hummels, Schmelzer and Subotic all out of contention – that is three fourths of the Dortmund defense – manager Jurgen Klopp asked Sven Bender to deputize in an unusual role. The German did so brilliantly, but to some expense…

After just a handful of minutes in the first half, Spanish referee Carlos Velasco Caballo had to stop Dortmund’s vital Champions League clash against Napoli. There was a lot of blood spurting from Sven Bender’s nose.

FIFA rules clearly state, “any player bleeding from a wound must leave the field of play. He may not return until the referee is satisfied.” Bender had to change his kit again and again during the game because of the red-stained shirt. That was the visual reason that kept him going in the eyes of the umpire.

At the end of the game, which Dortmund won 3-1, Klopp said: “I don’t know where our kit-man got all the jerseys from. I presume from the Club Shop at half time!” (which is likely to be true).

Manni’, as his coach has nicknamed him probably after Handy Manny, has suffered nose break on two previous occasions – in November 2011 against Arsenal and then three months later against Hannover. But he has come back again and again. Just like he did in the game against Napoli.
