Not even Mexican legend Hugo Sanchez had scored four goals in a single game. Yet Carlos Vela made it for Real Sociedad last weekend. Mexican fans wonder when (and if) he will be back with the national team sometime soon…

And to think that once in San Sebastian there was a strong policy of recruitment from the youth system. In other words, Basque people mistrusted outsiders. Until one day in 1989 when they still called home their tight 26,000-seater Estadio Atotxa. Back then, Loren joined Athletic Bilbao and there was absolutely no-one ready to take over from the youth ranks. Suddenly deprived of their main resource, the board called for a meeting and decided that they had to sign the first non-Basque player of the modern era. He couldn’t be Spanish so they managed to persuade Liverpool striker John Aldridge to join.

The Englishman didn’t even know where San Sebastian was but being an old sea dog himself, as soon as he saw the famous shell-shaped bay, he immediately fell in love with the town. To this day, its baroque architecture makes San Sebastian one of the most stylish Spanish seaside resorts.

More than twenty years later and possibly also because of this reason, Cancun-born Carlos Vela has given the impression of finding his feet in Northern Spain in the last couple of seasons. He’s been the club main source of goals in recent times. And on Sunday he played the poker netting all four of the goals that defeated Celta 4-3. In total, he has bagged nine since August.

Mexican fans wish Vela could carry his form to next summer’s World Cup but his now infamous rift with the Mexican federation, which dates back to 2005, doesn’t bode well. Unless the two parties can eventually make a step back and reconcile for a greater good. It must be difficult for Vela, considering that reportedly the Mexican soccer federation even denied his family any help after Hurricane Wilma stroke eight years ago – but will peace finally be possible?
