Before there was Tony Gonzalez, before there was Jason Witten, before there was Antonio Gates, there was Oakland Raiders tight end Todd Christensen.

Christensen, who led the NFL in receptions twice, has died in a Utah hospital at the age of 57 due to complications during surgery. Christensen had been suffering from liver disease and other illnesses.

After unsuccessful stints with the Dallas Cowboys and NY Giants, Christensen started to emerge as the best tight end in the NFL in 1982 with the Raiders.

In 1983 he led the NFL in receptions with 92, made the first of five consecutive Pro Bowl appearances and also led the league in receptions with 95 in 1986.

Christensen won two Super Bowl rings with the Raiders.
