It’s been a strange season for the New York Jets. After the whole debacle at the end of the preseason that knocked Mark Sanchez out of commission they had no choice but to start Geno Smith. While at times he’s been great he has also been a typically rookie.
So what does the team do? It brings back David Garrard. However, the idea is not to replace Smith but to help him develop and act as a mentor.
The plan is to put Garrard on the exempt list for the next two weeks to see how things go. Since knee issues caused him to retire it is unlikely they expect him to actually play making this more of a two week assistant coach tryout.
Rex Ryan put it well when he commented on the move:
"You know what? If he has a chance to help our football team, we'll explore it. With this exempt rule, after two games, we'll see where he's at.”
