Another one bites the dust.

After finishing last in the NL Central for the first time in seven years in addition to a two seasons in a row with the most losses in the team history, the Chicago Cubs fired manager Dale Sveum on Monday.

Team president Theo Epstein likes the young talent he has in the minor leagues but does not feel that Sveum is the right guy to turn them into consistent major leaguers.

''It's absolutely imperative that we create the best environment possible for young players to come up here, continue to learn, continue to develop and thrive at the big league level and win, ultimately,'' Epstein said. ''And that's not an easy thing to do.”

Speculation already is arising concerning the possibility of Yankees manager Joe Girardi, who grew up in Peoria, Ill., and played for Northwestern University and the Cubs.
